The Soloist
By Steve Lopez
Reviewer: Mary Kay Fischer

Serendipity brings Nathaniel Ayers to the attention of Steve Lopez when the LA Times columnist hears the homeless man creating beautiful music on a battered, 2 string violin. Ayers' musical talent is evident but he struggles with schizophrenia and dementia. Lopez feels compelled to help the Skid Row violinist who had been a Julliard classmate of Yo Yo Ma. This is an elegantly written, inspirational tale of disappointment and hope as each small victory out of the dark is celebrated and each setback is mourned. Movie released in April, 2009.

See You in a Hundred Years
By Logan Ward
Reviewer: Lori Rehm

Would you turn your back on virtually all 20th century conveniences? The author and his family made such a commitment. With humor and honesty, Ward recounts the struggles and victories his family encountered during their year on a Virginia farm. Snakes in the hen house and pests attacking the garden produce were but two of the trials they overcame. A far cry from today's reality TV, Ward's narrative draws you in and gives you hope.

The double narrative features Madame Michel, a seemingly drab, uneducated, unsophisticated concierge who tends to a Left Bank apartment building. Paloma Josse is a twelve-year-old resident of the building who also lives behind a façade. Their lives are transformed in unanticipated ways by the appearance of a new tenant who looks past their guises to discover the exceptional talents of two intriguing people.
